Understanding Degenerative Disc Disease

Causes

The primary cause of DDD is the natural aging process. As we age, the spinal discs lose hydration and elasticity, making them less effective as shock absorbers. Several factors can accelerate this degenerative process:

  1. Genetics: Some individuals are genetically predisposed to develop DDD.
  2. Injury: Trauma to the spine, such as from a fall or car accident, can damage the discs.
  3. Repetitive Stress: Jobs or activities that involve repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting can contribute to disc degeneration.
  4. Obesity: Excess weight puts additional stress on the spine, speeding up the degenerative process.
  5. Smoking: Smoking reduces blood flow to the discs, impairing their ability to repair themselves.

Symptoms

The symptoms of DDD can vary widely depending on the severity and location of the disc degeneration. Common symptoms include:

  1. Back Pain: Chronic pain in the lower back (lumbar region) or neck (cervical region) is a common symptom. The pain may range from mild to severe and can be exacerbated by activities such as bending, lifting, or twisting.
  2. Pain in the Extremities: If the degenerated disc affects nearby nerves, pain, numbness, or tingling may radiate to the arms (if the cervical discs are affected) or legs (if the lumbar discs are affected).
  3. Stiffness: Reduced flexibility and stiffness in the spine can occur, making it difficult to perform daily activities.
  4. Muscle Weakness: Compression of nerves can lead to weakness in the muscles served by those nerves.

Treatment

There is no cure for DDD, but various treatment options can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment approaches can be conservative or surgical, depending on the severity of the condition.

Conservative Treatments

  1. Physical Therapy and Lifestyle Modifications: Exercises and stretches can help strengthen the muscles around the spine, improve flexibility, and reduce pain. Maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and avoiding activities that strain the spine
  2. Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain. In some cases, doctors may prescribe stronger pain medications, muscle relaxants, or anti-inflammatory drugs.
  3. Chiropractic Care: Spinal adjustments by a chiropractor may help alleviate pain and improve function.

Interventional Treatments

  1. Intra Discal PRP Injection - involves injecting platelet-rich plasma directly into the affected disc to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain associated with disc degeneration.
  2. Disc Biacuplasty -  minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to target and relieve chronic back pain caused by degenerative disc disease by precisely heating the affected disc tissue, thereby reducing inflammation and disrupting pain signals.

If conservative treatments are not effective, surgery may be considered like Spinal Fusion and Artificial Disc Replacement
