Various Bursitis/Tendonitis: Causes, Symptoms, and TreatmenT

Causes

 Bursitis

  • Repetitive Motion: Activities that involve repetitive movements can cause bursitis, such as painting, gardening, or playing a musical instrument.
  • Prolonged Pressure: Leaning on elbows or kneeling for long periods can irritate the bursae.
  • Trauma: A direct blow to a joint can lead to bursitis.
  • Infection: Bursae near the skin surface can become infected.
  • Other Conditions: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and diabetes can contribute to bursitis.

 Tendonitis

  1. Overuse: Repeated stress on a tendon from activities like running, jumping, or playing certain sports.
  2. Age: Tendons become less flexible with age, making them more prone to injury.
  3. Improper Technique: Poor technique in sports or exercise can place excessive stress on tendons.
  4. Sudden Increase in Activity: Rapidly increasing the intensity or frequency of physical activity.
  5. Underlying Conditions: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk of tendonitis.

Symptoms

 Bursitis

  • Pain: Often described as a dull ache or stiffness around the affected area, which can worsen with movement.
  • Swelling: The area around the affected bursa may become swollen and tender.
  • Redness and Warmth: The skin over the inflamed bursa might appear red and feel warm.
  • Limited Movement: Pain and swelling can limit the range of motion in the affected joint.

 Tendonitis

  • Pain: A localized pain that worsens with movement.
  • Tenderness: The affected tendon may feel tender to the touch.
  • Swelling: The area around the tendon can become swollen.
  • Stiffness: Reduced flexibility and range of motion in the affected area.
  • Weakness: The muscle connected to the tendon may feel weak.

Treatment

 Bursitis/Tendonitis

  • Rest: Avoid activities that worsen the symptoms.
  • Ice: Applying ice packs can reduce swelling and pain.
  • Medications: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can help.
  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility.
  • Bracing for various tendonitis treatments involves using supportive devices to stabilize the affected tendon, reduce strain during movement, and promote healing.

Interventional Treatments:

  • Steroid Injection: Involves administering corticosteroids directly into the inflamed bursa/tendonitis to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve joint function.
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection is a cutting-edge treatment for various types of bursitis/tendonitis, utilizing concentrated platelets from the patient's own blood to accelerate healing and reduce inflammation in affected bursae/tendonitis.
