Rotator Cuff Tear: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Causes

Rotator cuff tears can occur due to acute injuries or chronic degeneration.

  1. Acute Injuries: These tears often result from a sudden, forceful movement such as lifting a heavy object, falling on an outstretched arm, or a sudden jerk. Athletes in sports like baseball, tennis, and weightlifting are particularly susceptible.
  2. Chronic Degeneration: Over time, the tendons can wear down due to repetitive stress and age-related changes. This type of tear is common in people over the age of 40 and those who engage in repetitive overhead activities, such as painting or carpentry.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a rotator cuff tear can vary depending on the severity of the tear. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain: This is usually felt on the front and side of the shoulder, especially when lifting or lowering the arm.
  • Weakness: Difficulty lifting or rotating the arm, particularly overhead movements.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Stiffness and a decreased ability to move the shoulder normally.
  • Crackling Sensation: A crackling or popping sensation when moving the shoulder in certain ways.

Treatment

The treatment for a rotator cuff tear depends on the severity of the injury and the patient's activity level and overall health. Treatment options include:

Conservative Treatments:
Rest: Avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain.

  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the shoulder muscles and improve flexibility.
  • Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation.

Interventional Treatments:

  • Steroid Injections: Corticosteroid injection to relieve pain and swelling.
  • PRP Injection -  involves using a concentration of the patient's own platelets to promote healing and reduce inflammation in the damaged tendons of the shoulder.

In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to address the underlying cause of the pain
