Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes inflamed. This condition is particularly common among runners, people who are overweight, and those who wear shoes with inadequate support.
Several factors can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis, including:
- Overuse and Repetitive Strain: Activities that put a lot of stress on the heel and attached tissue, such as long-distance running, ballet, or dance aerobics.
- Foot Structure: Flat feet, a high arch, or even an abnormal pattern of walking can affect the way weight is distributed when you’re on your feet, putting added stress on the plantar fascia.
- Age: Plantar fasciitis is most common between the ages of 40 and 60.
- Occupational Hazards: Jobs that keep you on your feet for long hours, such as teaching or factory work.
- Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes with poor arch support or soft soles can contribute to the problem.
